Temporary Conditions Signage Compliance Guide: Choosing the Right Sign Size

Ensuring your work zone is compliant with OTM Book 7 standards depends on the posted speed limit and the road type. Using the wrong size can result in non-compliance fines or increased liability.

1. 90 cm x 90 cm (Standard Size)

  • Low-Speed Roads: Required for roads with a posted speed limit of 60 km/h or less.
  • Urban Streets: The standard for most city and municipal two-lane roads.
  • Short Duration: Often used for quick utility work or maintenance where space is limited.

2. 120 cm x 120 cm (Oversize)

  • High-Speed Roads: Mandatory for any roadway with a posted speed limit of 70 km/h or higher.
  • Multi-Lane Highways: Required on roads with 3 or more lanes per direction, regardless of the speed limit.
  • High-Complexity Areas: Recommended by the MTO for areas with high traffic volume or "visual clutter" where maximum driver visibility is required.

Summary Rule of Thumb: If the speed is 70+ km/h or it’s a 400-series highway, you must use the 120 cm sign. For local residential and downtown streets (60 km/h or less), the 90 cm sign is the compliant standard.
